Before you go
Accommodation
Budget options range from free beach camping to ¥5,000/night guesthouses. The Shiraishi International Villa (¥5,000/person) is most popular with international visitors. San-chan's Guest House is the cheapest option at ¥5,000/person.
Connectivity
3G/4G available on Japan's major carriers; free WiFi at the port and some hotels. The island is well-connected for a rural destination.
Food
San-chan's is the only restaurant on the island (¥800-1500). For extended stays, shop in Kasaoka before boarding—the supermarket near the ferry terminal is well-stocked.
Money
Shiraishijima Post Office (白石島郵便局, 555 Shiraishijima, M-F 09:00-17:00) has an ATM available during business hours. Carry sufficient cash for your stay.
Seasonality
Peak season is July-August weekends. The Shiraishi Odori festival runs August 14-16. Outside summer, services are limited and the island is very quiet.
Transport
The Sanyo Kisen ferry from Kasaoka is the main access route; the terminal is a 10-minute walk from Kasaoka Station and well-signed in English. Ferry timetable available in English on the Sanyo Kisen website.
