Why go?

Sauraha is the primary gateway town for visiting Chitwan National Park, Nepal's most popular wildlife destination. The town sits directly across the Rapti River from the park entrance, making it the practical base for jungle safaris, elephant rides, and wildlife spotting including the rare one-horned rhinoceros. Originally a small Tharu village of mud and daub huts, Sauraha has grown into a tourist-focused town while retaining some local character through Tharu cultural programs and local crafts.

Understand

Sauraha lies in Chitwan District, just across the Rapti River from Chitwan National Park's eastern boundary. The town developed specifically to serve park visitors, evolving from a quaint Tharu village with half a dozen mud-and-daub hotels into a small town with Western-style hotels, restaurants, internet cafes, and gift shops. The local Tharu people maintain their cultural heritage through dance performances and crafts, though tourism has fundamentally transformed the area's economy and character.

When to go

The best time to visit Sauraha for wildlife viewing is during the dry season from October to February when animals congregate at water sources. The International Elephant Race takes place in December alongside the World Elephant Polo Competition, drawing visitors for these unique events. Summer months (March-June) can be extremely hot and humid, while monsoon season (July-September) brings heavy rainfall that can limit wildlife activities and make trails difficult.

Getting around

Sauraha is a small town compact enough to explore on foot. The main bazaar area with gift shops and restaurants is easily walkable from most accommodations. Local cycle-rickshaws and tempos provide transport for longer distances or for reaching specific attractions like the Elephant Breeding Center. Many guesthouses and lodges offer package tours that include all transport within the region.

Where to stay

Sauraha offers accommodation ranging from basic budget hostels to mid-range resorts. Budget options like Chilax House (US$3-10) provide dormitory rooms within walking distance of the park entrance, while lodges like Chitwan Gaida Lodge (NPR 600-2,500) offer private rooms with hot water. For a unique experience, Jungle Sunset Camp sits on the banks of the Rapti River directly facing the national park. Most lodges package accommodation with jungle activities including nature walks, elephant safaris, and Tharu cultural dances.

Food and drink

Sauraha's restaurants primarily serve Nepali cuisine with dal bhat (rice and lentils) as the staple meal. Budget-friendly options include Hamro Restaurant, Madipure's Restaurant, and Samjhana Restaurant, all offering typical Nepali fare. Park View Restaurant near the visitor centre is praised for its trained chef Chitra and lower prices than resorts, serving chicken steak, burgers, and lasagna alongside arrak and beer. Sweet Memory offers the best coffee in town in a family-run restaurant decorated in local style, open 07:00-22:00.

Things to do

Jungle safaris by foot, jeep, and elephant are the primary activities, offering chances to spot the great one-horned rhinoceros (hundreds exist in the park), various deer species, monkeys, crocodiles, pythons, and occasionally the Bengal tiger. Bird watching is excellent in and around the jungle, particularly at Bishajari Tal (20,000 Lakes), a wetlands area about 10 km northwest of Sauraha. Cultural experiences include Tharu cultural dance programs and visits to the Tharu Cultural Museum.

Safety

Sauraha is generally safe for tourists, though standard precautions apply regarding personal belongings. The main safety concern relates to wildlife encounters during jungle activities, which is why licensed guides are required for park excursions. Swimming in the Rapti River near Sauraha is not recommended due to strong currents and crocodiles. Alcohol consumption should be moderate, especially before jungle walks.

Buy

The main bazaar area contains over a dozen gift shops selling souvenirs and locally-made crafts. Tharu wares are specialty items, particularly dhokiya-woven colourful baskets made locally from rice straw. Other purchases typically include textiles, woodcarvings, and wildlife-related memorabilia. Bargaining is expected at most shops.
