Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is available via Brazilian carriers (Vivo, Claro, TIM, Oi) with 4G in the town center. WiFi is typically available at hotels. SIM cards can be purchased in Porto Alegre or Passo Fundo before arriving.
Emergency
Police and basic medical services are available in town. For serious medical emergencies, travel to Ijuí (about 80km) or Passo Fundo (about 130km) which have larger hospitals.
Language
Portuguese is the local language. Guarani is spoken by some Indigenous communities in the region but not commonly encountered by tourists. English is limited outside of hotels.
Money
The local currency is the Brazilian Real (R$). Credit cards are accepted at hotels and some restaurants but may not work at smaller establishments or the ticket booth. Carry cash for the Light and Show tickets and local dining.
Transport
There is no train service. Intercity buses connect to Ijuí and Passo Fundo but schedules are limited. Renting a car is the most flexible option for reaching São Miguel das Missões and exploring the region.
Weather
Summers (Dec–Feb) are warm (25–35°C) with mild nights. Winters (Jun–Aug) can be cold (5–15°C), especially for the evening Light and Show. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures.
