Why Go

Sanur is Bali's oldest upscale resort area, offering a mature and relaxed atmosphere that contrasts sharply with the party scene of Kuta. The town appeals especially to middle-aged travelers, families, and Europeans seeking quality beach time without the chaos. Despite abundant restaurants and accommodation, Sanur maintains a quiet, village-like feel with spacious hotel gardens and a splendid 5-km paved beachfront path.

Understand

Sanur developed as a tourist area due to its proximity to Denpasar and was further planned for international tourism following Indonesia's 1974 tourism plan. Most hotels are large with spacious gardens, and the area is sandwiched between the main Jalan Ngurah Rai bypass and the beach. The main north-south route Jalan Danau Tamblingan makes orientation easy.

Getting In

Sanur is located on the east coast of South Bali, accessible via Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) which is about 15-20 minutes away. The most convenient way from the airport is by taxi or pre-arranged hotel transfer. Public buses operate in the Greater Denpasar area with Sanur on the route.

Getting Around

Sanur is a great walking town with relatively quiet streets and a splendid 5-km paved beachfront path. Jalan Danau Tamblingan is the main street with outlets for car, motorbike, and bicycle rental. Metered taxis patrol the streets, and local bemos run regularly along Jalan Danau Tamblingan and Jalan Danau Poso.

When To Go

The International Kite Festival takes place every July at Padang Galak beach just north of Sanur, featuring traditional Balinese giant kites up to 10m in length. From June to August, visitors will see many giant kites being flown as a festival to send messages to Hindu Gods for abundant crops. The dry season from April to October is generally best for beach activities.

Where To Stay

Sanur's accommodation is predominantly in the medium and high market sector, aimed at families. Hotels are spaced further apart than in Kuta, often with large gardens. Budget options exist along Jalan Danau Tamblingan with guesthouses and homestays starting from Rp 170,000, while luxury beachfront properties like Bali Hyatt cater to higher-end travelers.

Food And Drink

The Night Market at the northern end of Jalan Danau Tamblingan near Jalan Pungutan offers very cheap local food. For mid-range dining, Kayu Manis serves Western and Asian fusion cuisine at Rp 40,000-70,000 per entree, while Warung Blanjong is renowned for authentic Balinese dishes like pepes be pashi (steamed fish in banana leaves). Jalan Danau Tamblingan has numerous bars and cafes, with Smorgas Café being popular for coffee and baked goods.

Things To Do

The Le Mayeur Museum preserves the former home of Belgian impressionist painter Adrian Jean Le Mayeur, who arrived in Bali in 1932 and married a Balinese Legong dancer. The Mangrove Information Centre at the 600-hectare mangrove forest south of Sanur offers educational boardwalk tours. Pura Blanjong contains Bali's oldest known artifact - the Prasati Blanjong inscription from the 10th century. The Turtle Conservation Centre on Serangan Island educates visitors about marine conservation.
