Why go?

Canggu is a coastal area in South Bali that has transformed from rice fields into a hub for digital nomads and expats. It offers black sand beaches, world-class surf breaks, and a laid-back vibe with plenty of cafes, bars, and restaurants. The area is less frenetic than Seminyak but still has a lively social scene.

Getting in

Taxis are hard to find in Canggu; most travel is by private car or motorcycle. Many accommodations offer complimentary airport pickup, which is the easiest way to arrive. The drive from Ngurah Rai Airport takes about 45–60 minutes depending on traffic.

Getting around

Canggu is great for biking: you can explore rice paddies and beaches by bicycle. Some guesthouses rent bikes. Traffic is heavy and chaotic, so caution is needed. Scooters are also popular, but be aware of narrow roads and aggressive drivers.

Things to do

Surfing is the main draw, with waves suitable for all levels at beaches like Echo Beach, Berawa, and Pererenan. Watch the sunset from a surfboard or a beachside bar. For non-surfing activities, there are yoga classes at Serenity Yoga (Rp 100,000), spa treatments at Casa Day Spa (Rp 40,000–225,000), and excellent golf at nearby Nirwana Bali Golf Course in Tanah Lot. Walk through the rice fields to observe Balinese village life.

Food and drink

Dining ranges from cheap local warungs to upscale international restaurants. Warung Bu Tika offers Indonesian buffet meals for Rp 10,000–20,000. CRATE Cafe is a popular coffee and brunch spot. For dinner, try People's for sushi and tapas (mains Rp 25,000–60,000) or Te'Amo Gastro-Bistro for wood-fired pizza and pasta. Bars and beach clubs dominate the nightlife: Finns Beach Club has 4 pools, 9 bars, and sunset views; The Lawn and Sand Bar offer direct beachfront relaxation.

Where to stay

Accommodation ranges from budget hostels and homestays to luxury villas. Backpacker-friendly options include Serenity Eco Guesthouse (Rp 200,000–500,000 per room), Kos One Hostel, and Layday Surf Hostel. Mid-range villas and hotels are plentiful, with prices from about US $40 per night for a resort like The Raja Ombak Surfers Resort. Many villas are available for longer stays and can be rented weekly.
