The Santa Monica Mountains run through the heart of Los Angeles but have been largely preserved as an oasis of geographic and biological diversity. Miles of scenic roads and hiking trails offer a welcome escape from Los Angeles traffic without requiring a long drive.

Fees
Park entry is free; state park parking $10-12. Campsite fees vary from $10 (hike-in) to $45 (drive-in).
Food
No restaurants in the park—bring supplies or plan detours to nearby Malibu, Agoura Hills, or Thousand Oaks.
Safety
Wildfires are common in summer; campfires often prohibited. Rattlesnakes and deer ticks (Lyme disease risk) are endemic—wear long sleeves in scrub areas.
Transport
A car is essential for accessing most trailheads and exploring the mountains. Mulholland Highway and scenic canyon roads connect the area.
Water
Never drink water from creeks or lakes in the Santa Monica Mountains—carry all drinking water with you.
Weather
Mediterranean climate: summers hot (70s-100s°F), winters mild (60s°F). Rainy season October to April brings landslide risks.
