Why go?

Los Angeles is a global center of culture, business, media, and international trade, most famous as a major center of the world's television, motion picture, and music industry. When to go

Los Angeles enjoys a temperate Mediterranean climate most of the year, but microclimates exist. Summers are warm and occasionally hot with smog; winters are mild with rainfall. Spring experiences 'May Gray' and 'June Gloom' with fog and overcast along the coast. Fall is warm and dry with frequent wildfires. Santa Ana winds can occur in fall and winter, bringing hot dry air from the desert.

Getting around

A car is the most convenient way to navigate LA's spread-out geography, but traffic can be heavy. The Metro rail and bus network covers many areas, though it's slower. Ride-sharing and taxis are widely available. Parking can be expensive downtown and in popular neighborhoods.

Food and drink

Los Angeles is one of the best places in the country for food, with diverse cuisines from immigrant communities, inexpensive taco trucks, and gourmet food trucks. The late critic Jonathan Gold highlighted gems in LA Weekly and LA Times. For drinks, hotel bars like Chateau Marmont and Skybar are popular; Hollywood and Sunset Strip are nightlife centers. Bars close at 2AM with last calls around 1:30AM.

Shopping

Los Angeles has diverse shopping destinations from high-end Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills to the chaotic Broadway in Downtown with discounted brand names and Santee Alley flea market with knock-offs. Other areas include Larchmont Blvd, Melrose Avenue, and specialized districts for flowers, jewelry, etc. Downtown also has the Arts District and Gallery Row.
