Why go?

Santa Monica anchors LA's Westside with one of California's most recognizable beaches and its historic pier, where the railroad built the original amusement park in the early 1900s to fill empty weekend train seats. The city blends affluent single-family neighborhoods with lifelong surfers, young professionals, and renters drawn by high quality of life and a progressive community ethos. While real estate values rank among the world's priciest, tourists find moderate summer temperatures (around 75°F) that contrast sharply with the San Fernando Valley's 100°F heat. Visitors also discover the RAND Corporation think tank and major video game studios like Activision Blizzard and Naughty Dog.

Getting in

Santa Monica Airport (SMO) handles general aviation and business jets. Metro's Expo Line connects downtown Los Angeles to downtown Santa Monica at the E-line stations on 4th and 17th streets. The Big Blue Bus system operates routes linking Santa Monica to neighboring Brentwood, Westwood, Venice Beach, and onward to UCLA. Coastal transportation includes the Big Blue Bus Route 4 along Pacific Coast Highway. Rideshare services and taxis are readily available.

Getting around

Most tourist destinations are within easy walking distance of each other. The Big Blue Bus system operates multiple lines with some running every 10 minutes, linking Santa Monica to Brentwood, Westwood, and Venice Beach. Traffic on Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica Blvd, and Lincoln Blvd is very heavy during rush hours and weekends. The city operates the Breeze bike share system with stations throughout Santa Monica and adjacent Venice Beach, and the flat Strand bike path connects all Westside beach cities. Big Blue Bus and Metro Rapid fleets include pneumatic wheelchair ramps with 50% fares for passengers with a disability.

When to go

Santa Monica enjoys a Mediterranean climate with mild winters (49-62°F) and warm summers (62-70°F). Summer and early fall bring the warmest temperatures, but the marine layer keeps Santa Monica significantly cooler than inland Los Angeles. Rainfall concentrates in winter months (2-3 inches in December and January), with virtually no rain from June through September. Peak tourist seasons are summer and major holidays.

Food and drink

Santa Monica's dining ranges from cheap eats to world-class cuisine. Bay Cities Italian Deli (1517 Lincoln Blvd) serves some of the west side's best sandwiches with likely long waits at peak hours. Tacos Por Favor (1408 Olympic Blvd) offers fresh Mexican food in a taqueria setting with excellent chicken mole burritos. Budget breakfast spots include Rae's Restaurant (2901 Pico Blvd, daily 6:30AM-4PM) featured in Reservoir Dogs and True Romance, and Snug Harbor (2323 Wilshire Blvd). High-end dining at Melisse (1104 Wilshire Blvd) offers tasting menus from $100 per person, while The Lobster (1602 Ocean Ave) provides Pacific Ocean views with dinner for two from $120. Over 50 happy hour specials are available town-wide, though domestic beer costs $5 and martinis frequently exceed $15.

Things to do

The Santa Monica Pier holds Pacific Park, an old-fashioned amusement park with a small roller coaster and iconic Ferris wheel visible throughout the beach, plus restaurants, bars, and fishing at all hours. The beach extends wide and beautiful on both sides of the pier; Perry's rents bikes and roller blades to explore the Strand south toward Venice. Third Street Promenade is a vibrant outdoor mall three blocks from the beach with restaurants, movie theaters, bookstores, bars, and quality street performers. Bergamot Station Arts Center (2525 Michigan Ave, free admission) houses over 30 galleries including the Santa Monica Museum of Art. The Museum of Flying (3100 Airport Ave, $10 adults) displays Douglas Aircraft artifacts including a Wright Flyer replica and WWII fighters, with flight simulator rides at $8 each. Trapeze School New York at the pier ($47-65) offers flying trapeze classes seven days a week.

Safety

Crime rates in tourist areas are relatively low thanks to increased police presence and neighborhood watch campaigns by business owners. While a large homeless population exists in the area, visitors are unlikely to be seriously bothered. The small neighborhood around Pico Boulevard and 20th Street can be rougher, and side streets in this area are best avoided at night.

Connectivity

Santa Monica offers several free City Wi-Fi hotspots throughout the area. Major cellular carriers (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint) provide full coverage throughout the city. Power plugs use Type A/B sockets (two-pin and two-pin with grounding) at 120V/60Hz, standard US voltage.

Day trips

Santa Monica sits at a strategic junction for exploring Southern California. Venice Beach is a short ride south on the Strand bike path, famous for Muscle Beach, eclectic nightlife, and street performers. Malibu lies northwest along Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) with great beaches, surfing, and celebrity sightings. Beverly Hills and its famed Rodeo Drive shopping is a short drive east on Wilshire or Santa Monica Boulevard. Culver City, accessible via Metro's Expo Line, has undergone a rebirth with Sony Pictures Studios, many restaurants, and entertainment options. Brentwood offers upscale neighborhoods and potential celebrity sightings on Santa Monica's northern border. Marina del Rey contains the world's largest man-made pleasure craft harbor with numerous restaurants and hotels but less tourist traffic.

Etiquette

Tipping is customary in Los Angeles: 15-20% at restaurants, $1-2 per drink at bars, 15-20% for taxi rides and food delivery. California is health-conscious, with many vegetarian and vegan options available. Tread lightly and pack out waste when visiting beaches and trails to protect the sensitive coastal environment. Personal space is valued, particularly on beaches and in stores.
