Sanmenxia is a regional transportation hub with high-speed rail connections to Xi'an (1 hr), Luoyang (30 min), Zhengzhou (1 hr), and Lanzhou (4 hr). Two railway stations serve the city.

Best visited in spring or autumn. Summers reach 30°C; winters drop below −10°C with occasional snow. Swan season runs October through March.
