Why Go?

Luoyang served as capital for 9 ruling dynasties, including Eastern Han and Wei during the Three Kingdoms era. As the eastern terminus of the Silk Road and a junction for the Grand Canal, it offers unparalleled access to ancient Chinese civilization. Visitors come for the Longmen Grottoes (UNESCO World Heritage), White Horse Temple (China's first official Buddhist temple), and Guanlin Temple dedicated to the warrior Guan Yu. The city has a population exceeding 7 million with 2.25 million in the urban area, providing modern conveniences while preserving historical grandeur.

Luoyang Station handles slower trains to Beijing (8-11h), Guangzhou (24h), Shanghai (17h). When to Go

Luoyang experiences four distinct seasons: hot rainy summers (June-August, 30-33°C), mild sunny autumns, and dry cold winters (December-February, -3 to 8°C) with sparse snow. The Luoyang Peony Festival in April at Wangcheng Park is a major draw—entry normally free except during the festival (¥30). Summer heat can be intense, making air-conditioned museums like Luoyang Museum ideal refuges.

Safety

Luoyang is generally safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply: watch belongings in crowded areas and tourist sites. Be aware of taxi drivers who may overcharge foreigners—know the starting fare (¥5-8) and rates. Left luggage at Luoyang Station charges ¥10 displayed but ¥15 to foreigners who don't assert the price. At Longmen Station, use the direct shuttle bus outside rather than following touts who may discourage you.

    Luoyang Jujia Hostel

Not a hostel per se but more a homestay in a clean, well organised private apartment. The neighbourhood is a real, non-touristy and friendly area with a lot of atmosphere to explore in the day and in the evening (local restaurants abound, including franchises such as Mr. Lee 10 min walk north on Xiyuan Rd). Rooms with shared facilities (hot water shower) and free Internet/Wi-Fi. Guest kitchen, washing machine, safety box and café available. The owner is a very nice person with generous coffee but his English is very basic. It is somewhat far from the train station (40 min by bus ¥1, 15 min by taxi ¥19) but do not try to find it alone, the owner or his son will kindly pick you up. If visiting during the winter be prepared for the cold night because there is not an ambient heater. However the owner will provide you with a comfortable heated blanket which will be more than enough for a nice evening sleep.
