Overview
San Juan Chamula is a small town in the mountainous jungles of Chiapas, home to the indigenous Tzotzil people (sometimes called the Chamula). The town feels a world apart from the rest of Mexico, fiercely independent and grudgingly accepting outsiders.

Etiquette
Do not photograph locals without permission. Photography inside the church is strictly prohibited and can result in camera confiscation, fines, or jail time.
Money
Mexican pesos (M$) are used. Cash is preferred for small purchases at the market.
Safety
Chamula has its own police force and does not accept state or federal help. Tourists have generally been safe, but the area has limited rule of law.
Transport
Colectivos from San Cristóbal de las Casas cost M$22 one-way (20 minutes). Taxis run about M$120.
