Overview
San Andrés is a Colombian Caribbean island famous for the "Mar de siete colores" (seven-coloured sea), where varying ocean depths create stunning turquoise to deep blue gradients. Unlike polished Caribbean resorts, this island offers a more authentic, budget-friendly experience with all-inclusive packages catering mainly to Colombian tourists.

Before you go
Money
San Andrés is a tax-free zone, making goods cheaper than mainland Colombia. Currency is Colombian Peso (COP). ATMs available in downtown area; credit cards accepted at larger hotels and shops.
Safety
Generally safe island with friendly locals. Main hazards are motorcycle traffic and incomplete sidewalks. Snorkeling areas have small entrance fees (COP$2,000-3,000).
Shopping
Tax-free status makes perfumes, alcohol, and clothing particularly good deals. Bargain aggressively at shops. Beware counterfeit merchandise—only buy from reputable stores and request written warranties.
Transport
Golf buggies cost around COP$100,000/day (restricted south after 4PM). Public buses COP$1,700. Taxis COP$11,000 from airport, COP$6,000 downtown. Prices double after midnight.
Water
Tap water is not safe to drink on San Andrés—it comes from wells and desalination plants. Stick to bottled water or coconut water served in shells.
