Overview
Sambalpur is the largest city in western Odisha and a gateway to the Hirakud Dam—the longest earth dam in the world—whose 640-km shoreline creates a dramatic reservoir backdrop. The city is historically significant for its role in resistance against British colonial rule, particularly Veer Surendra Sai.

Sambalpur is famous for Sambalpuri sarees and handloom textiles. Gole Bazar is the main shopping centre for these textiles, with prices ranging from a few hundred to over a hundred thousand rupees.

Try pakhalo—rice soaked in water with vegetables—at local eateries. VSS Marg near Burla has the highest concentration of restaurants. Malini Cafe near Lakshmi Talkies is known for South Indian cuisine.

Transport
Three railway stations serve Sambalpur: Sambalpur Junction (main), Sambalpur City, and Sambalpur Road. Auto-rickshaws are the main local transport. NH-6 passes through for road connections.
Weather
Sambalpur experiences extreme temperatures: up to 45°C in summer and as low as 7°C in winter. Visit between October and March for comfortable weather.
