Overview
Puri is a major Hindu pilgrimage city centered on the Jagannath Temple and its Kalinga architecture. The beach, temple food, Ratha Yatra, and nearby Konark and Chilika excursions create a strong mix of devotion, coast, and day trips.
Languages: English, Hindi, Tamil
Why Go
Puri is one of the Char Dham (Four Abodes), considered the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Hindus. The city blends religion with vacation appeal, featuring the 12th-century Jagannath Temple with its world-famous Ratha Yatra festival in July. The 9km golden sand beach offers surfing opportunities with rough waves, making it a rare Indian coastal destination where wave sports are viable. Unlike busy Goa, Puri provides a more authentic Odia beach experience with fewer international tourists.

Understand
Puri literally means 'city' in Sanskrit. The Jagannath Temple exemplifies Kalinga architecture and is dedicated to Lord Jagannath (Lord of the World). The beach is about 9km long with golden sand and rough waters ideal for surfing. The town appeals equally to Hindu pilgrims completing their Char Dham circuit and vacationing Indian families seeking beach time.

Getting In
Puri has a railway station with good connectivity to the rest of India. For flights, travelers must go to Bhubaneswar Airport (approximately 60-70km away). The main bus stand connects to Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. Most overseas tourists stay near the beach area.

Getting Around
Cycle rickshaws, auto-rickshaws, and electric rickshaws are available but always agree on a price before departing. Cycle rickshaws cost around ₹520. You can hire Royal Enfield motorbikes on C.T. Road, which is useful for driving along the coast to Konark (Sun Temple). Confirm prices twice as drivers frequently attempt to overcharge.

When To Go
The Ratha Yatra festival held in July is the most famous time to visit, when the temple's deities are paraded on massive chariots. The beach can be rough during full moon periods with high waves. Monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rains that may disrupt travel.

Where To Stay
Most overseas tourists stay near the beach. Hotel areas include Swargadwar (closer to the cremation site with affordable hotels) and C.T. Road (further from the action). Sea-facing non-AC rooms are often preferable to AC non-sea-facing rooms. Avoid booking through Kolkata-based services; arrive without reservations and book on the spot. Budget options like Balananda Tirthasram offer rooms from ₹325-425.

Food And Drink
Pure vegetarian restaurants near the Jagannath temple serve temple food (bhog). Sweet shops like Ganguram Sweets and Original Nrusingha Sweets are local institutions. Bengali food is available at Dada Boudir Restaurant. Chung Wah offers Chinese cuisine on VIP Road. Avoid beachside food stalls selling fish and meat—these are notorious for causing digestive issues even among hardened Indian stomachs.

Things To Do
Visit the Jagannath Temple (open only to orthodox Hindus, dress conservatively, no cameras or phones allowed). See the Gundicha Temple, destination of the Ratha Yatra. Explore Puri Beach for surfing and camel/horse rides. Visit the Puri Lighthouse (₹10 for Indians, ₹25 for foreigners) from 4-5PM for sea views. The Puri-Konark Marine Drive offers deserted beaches and views of rivers flowing into the sea.

Safety
Do not go to the beach after 8PM. Keep belongings secure in budget hotels on Swargadwar or New Puri. If seriously ill, go to Kalinga Hospital in Bhubaneswar as Puri hospitals are very basic and unclean. Avoid beach food stalls selling fish and meat—eating at hotels is safe. Stay away from monkeys and do not lure them with food. Be cautious of pandas (temple priests) who extract money ruthlessly; carry small change (₹1, ₹2, ₹5, ₹10) to appease them.

Day Trips
Konark (Sun Temple) is nearby and considered a must-visit. Satapada on Chilika Lake is great for dolphin sighting excursions. Raghurajpur village is famous for Patta Chitra traditional scroll painting and interesting temples. The Puri-Konark Marine Drive passes through deserted beaches with some areas having quicksand.
