Why go?
Chilika Lake is Asia's largest saltwater lagoon, spreading across 1,100 km² of brackish waters on Odisha's South Coast. The lake is a Ramsar wetland of international importance and draws bird-watchers from around the world for its winter migratory spectacle—flamingos, northern pintails, and over 150 species arrive from Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Himalayas between October and March. Beyond birds, the lagoon is home to the Irrawaddy dolphin and 225 species of fish, making it a top nature destination away from India's more crowded tourist circuits.

Understand
The Chilika Lake ecosystem is centered around Nalaban Island, a designated Bird Sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act where bird-watchers flock in winter. The larger islands—Parikud, Phulbari, Berahpura, Nuapara, Nalbana, and Tampara—lie between the sandbar and the lake, separated by shallow channels. Smaller named islands include Breakfast Island, Honeymoon Island, and Beacon Island, each offering different experiences from sunrise viewing to peacocks roaming near the Kalijai Temple. The rare limbless lizard Barkudia insularis is endemic to one of the lake's small islands.

Getting in
Balugaon and Rambha are the two major towns serving as entry points for Chilika Lake. The Government of Odisha Tourism Counter at the Tourist Bungalow in Rambha (District Ganjam) can provide more information—phone +91 6810 278346. OTDC (Odisha Tourism Development Corporation) boats can be hired at Barkul and Rambha, with boats ranging from 7-seater to 34-seater options. Motorboats cost between ₹410 (7-seater) to ₹790 (34-seater) per hour, while a special OTDC tour from Barkul to Kalijai costs ₹40 per head.

Get around
Auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws are available for local transport around the entry towns. Boat travel is the primary way to explore the lake and its islands—OTDC motorboats can be hired at Barkul and Rambha for ₹410-₹790 per hour depending on boat size. Private machine-operated boats are also available but require bargaining for a fair deal. Outboard motors are not allowed near the bird sanctuary. A boat journey from Rambha to Satapada takes about 2½ hours.

When to go
The best time to visit Chilika is during the winter months (November to March) when migratory birds arrive from Siberia, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Himalayas. January brings the Makar Mela pilgrimage to Kalijai Island when devotees flock to pay obeisance to Goddess Kalijai. The monsoon months (June to September) see Nalabana Island completely submerged, and some boat services may be disrupted. Summer months can be hot and less ideal for bird-watching.

A three-island tour (Breakfast Island, Bird Island, Beacon Island) costs ₹875, and a five-island tour including Sanakuda and Honeymoon Island is ₹1,650. At Barkul, water scooters and pedal boats are available; pedal boats at Tampara cost ₹75. Mangalajodi, a former poachers' village turned community-owned ecotourism venture, offers wildlife experiences. The Chilika Sea Mouth Beach has vendors selling fresh seafood, oysters, and pearls straight from shells.

Safety
Do not be tempted to buy pearls or corals from Chilika Lake—touts bring freshwater oysters from Hyderabad and sell cultured pearls as natural. These are available for ₹20 onwards. Touts also falsely claim the efficacy of "black pearls." Outboard motors are prohibited near the bird sanctuary. Boat travel during monsoon months may be restricted when Nalabana Island is submerged. Standard water safety precautions apply when on boats.
