Health
Malaria is frequent throughout the reserve. No medical facilities; bring all necessary medications. Traditional herbal remedies are used locally for snake bites.
Language
Spanish is essential for negotiating prices and interacting with locals. Some indigenous languages are spoken. At least one person in the travel party should speak Spanish.
Money
Local currency is Honduran lempiras (L). Prices range from L50 for chicken bus rides to L5000 for expresso boat charters. Gold can be purchased in Las Marias at approximately L200/gram.
Safety
Malaria risk is high; bring prophylaxis. Car robberies occur on the Tocoa-Batalla route. Serpent antidote unavailable in Las Marias. Coastal communities unsafe for solo women at night.
Transport
All internal transport is by boat; there are no roads inside the reserve. Boats must be negotiated; expect to pay more as an outsider. Schedules are infrequent and irregular.
Weather
Dry season (December-June) offers easier travel and fewer mosquitoes. Wet season brings more mosquitoes and difficult conditions. Check conditions before traveling.
