Overview
Reefton is a tiny inland town of about 1,000 people beside the Inangahua River, one of the larger settlements on the otherwise sparse West Coast. It is notable for its gold mining and coal mining heritage, and for being the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have a public electricity supply when its hydroelectric power station opened in 1888.
