Get Around
Punakaiki is a tiny settlement with everything accessible on foot. The main attractions are along State Highway 6, which runs through town. See
The Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes Walk is the main attraction — a 20-minute boardwalk loop (partially wheelchair accessible) through picturesque limestone formations. At Dolomite Point, timing your visit during high tide with westerly waves produces the best blow hole spouts. The Punakaiki Cavern is a free small cave explorable with a torch.

Things To Do
The Pororari River Track follows a river valley from just north of the Pancake Rocks, with the full circular route taking about 4 hours. The Truman Track is an easy 1.4 km (30-minute) round-trip through subtropical forest to coastline views — note the stairway to the beach has been closed since 2019. The Paparoa Track is a Great Walk suitable for multi-day hiking. Kayaking on the Pororari River with Punakaiki Canoes includes wetsuits, booties, dry bags, and lifejackets. Nature's Tours offers guided coastal and forest explorations for $45-400.
