Before you go
Connectivity
Mobile coverage exists but may be patchy in mountainous areas. WiFi availability is limited; plan ahead for connectivity needs.
Etiquette
Remove shoes before entering ryokan-style accommodations and sitting on tatami. No alcohol policy at Momoiwa-so Youth Hostel.
Money
Cash is essential on the island; ATMs may be limited. Budget ¥6000+ per night for traditional guesthouses. Youth hostel beds from ¥3150.
Packing
Bring sturdy hiking shoes, rain gear, and carry sufficient water. Streams are not drinkable without treatment. Tatami-floor sleeping on ferries—bring socks.
Transport
Ferries from Wakkanai (¥2200 one-way) are the only way to reach Rebun; book early in peak summer. Five daily services in summer, fewer in winter.
Weather
Visit in summer (June-August) for best conditions. Heavy snowfall closes trails and reduces ferry services in winter months.
