Getting In
By car, Rainbow Beach is approximately 75 km from the Bruce Highway at Gympie, taking around one hour via well-signposted roads. Experienced 4WD drivers can access the town from Noosa via Cooloola Way, or drive along Great Sandy National Park beaches at low tide (permits required). Premier Coaches and Greyhound Australia both operate one to two buses daily between Brisbane and Cairns, stopping in Rainbow Beach with morning southbound and evening northbound services.

Getting Around
Rainbow Beach is compact enough to explore on foot. Taxis are available for reaching distant caravan parks. The National Parks Office, located on the right as you enter town, provides maps of the town, walking trails, and 4WD driving routes through the national park.

When to Go
The area can be visited year-round, though summer (December-February) offers warm weather ideal for swimming with dolphins and beach activities. Winter nights can be cool. The shoulder seasons of spring and autumn provide pleasant temperatures for hiking Carlo Sand Blow and exploring Coloured Sands.

Where to Stay
Two backpacker hostels on Spectrum Avenue cater to budget travelers: Dingos' Backpackers and Frasers at Rainbow Beach. Holiday apartments at Rainbow Getaway include pools and gyms. For those with national park permits, camping is available near town, while a caravan park on Carlo Road near the boat ramp suits RV travelers.

Cafes near Rainbow Beach Road offer breakfast and lunch but rarely dinner. The Surf Club provides meals and drinks with ocean views, while the local hotel and tennis club on Double Island Drive also serve food. A seafood restaurant and takeaway near the town entrance offers local fish dishes. The Yacht Club in nearby Tin Can Bay serves lunch and dinner with bay views. A butcher provides quality meats for self-catering BBQs.

Things to Do
Swim with dolphins or join the morning boat trip to feed them at Tin Can Bay. Take a helicopter or plane joyflight over the coastline. Para or hang-glide from Carlo Sand Blow for postcard-worthy views of the colored sand formations. Dive with sharks at Wolf Rock. Rent a 4WD to explore Great Sandy National Park beaches and trails, then catch the ferry to K'gari for camping and extended exploration. Fishing and visiting shipwrecks are also popular activities.

Rainbow Beach has clothing shops, two small supermarkets, camping gear retailers and rental outlets, plus a bottle shop. The butcher stocks quality meats for BBQs. Ice, bait, and firewood are readily available. For larger supermarkets or pharmacies, travel 25 km to Cooloola Cove along the route toward Tin Can Bay.
