Why Go

Its main attraction is an 868-meter pier extending into the ocean, and the sheltered bay waters provide almost wave-free beaches. Hervey Bay serves as a gateway to K'gari (the world's largest sand island) and the southern Great Barrier Reef.

Getting In

Hervey Bay is accessible by car (3.5 hours from Brisbane), with the main boat harbour offering ferry services to K'gari. Lady Elliot Island is reachable by a 30-minute flight. The town has no direct international airport; the nearest major airport is in Brisbane.

Getting Around

The 18km bay foreshore cycleway provides a scenic route along the waterfront. The Esplanade is the main road running along the waterfront, with apartments, motels, and parks between the road and beach. Local bus services connect the different townships.

When To Go

Whale watching season runs from late July through early November, when Antarctic humpback whales migrate north and stay in Hervey Bay's sheltered waters. Summer months (December-February) see daily highs around 30°C with humidity and occasional heat waves reaching 35°C. Winter months offer mild weather with highs around 22°C, making it ideal for outdoor activities.

Where To Stay

Accommodation along the Esplanade includes apartments, motels, and hostels. Palace Adventures (Palace Backpackers Hostel) at 184 Torquay Road in Scarness offers budget accommodation with a swimming pool near food shops and the beach. Colonial Village YHA features tropical gardens, a large pool and spa, bistro, bar, and complimentary breakfast for backpackers. The Beachside Motor Inn is located opposite the beach in Pialba on the Esplanade.

Food And Drink

Restaurants and take-away places line the town and esplanade, including Thai, Italian, Chinese, and Mexican options. Kiosks, fish and chips shops, bakeries, and cafes are near the beach. The Deck Restaurant & Bar is a premier seafood restaurant open seven days a week with a seafood buffet on Fridays and Saturdays. Salt Café offers ocean views. Gringos Mexican Cantina at 449 Esplanade in Torquay opens at 5:30PM daily. Pubs like the Torquay Hotel and Beach House are across from the beach on the Esplanade, perfect for people-watching.

Things To Do

Whale watching is the major activity from August to October when humpback whales congregate in the bay. The WetSide Water Education Park features water slides, surfing, and a Board Rider wave machine using recycled rainwater. Susan River Homestead offers 2.5-hour horse rides for $85 per adult plus $15 per person for pickup/dropoff. Krystal Klear Charters provides dolphin watching and snorkeling tours for $90 adults/$50 children with barbecue lunch at Round Island. Blue Dolphin Marine Tours depart at 8AM for dolphin boat tours. The Urangan Jetty (980m long) is popular for fishing and spotting local pier rats.

Safety

Hervey Bay has a relaxed, safe feel, though there is a growing (albeit minor) drugs problem that shouldn't impact most visitors' experiences. The calm waters make swimming safe along the sandy beaches.

Day Trips

K'gari (Fraser Island) is the premier day trip destination, accessible by ferry from the boat harbour. The world's largest sand island offers beaches, freshwater lakes, and rainforest. Hervey Bay itself can be explored over several days with visits to the Urangan Jetty, local museums, and water activities.
