Why Go?

Phonsavan is the remote, purpose-built capital of Xieng Khouang Province in Central Laos, standing at 1,100m elevation amid pine forests and green hills. The town serves as the essential gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage Plain of Jars, but also offers its own war-history museums, colorful Hmong markets, and traditional craft workshops. With a cool climate year-round and a David Lynch spaghetti-western main street, it provides a quieter, more rugged Laotian experience than Luang Prabang or Vientiane.

Getting In

Xiang Khouang Airport is temporarily closed from Oct 2024 through June 2025 for runway repairs. Lao Airlines normally operates 4-6 flights weekly in low-peak seasons from Vientiane, Luang Prabang, or Hanoi/Vinh. For land arrival, buses connect to Luang Prabang (200,000 kip, air-con, 08:30 departure), Vientiane (95,000-130,000 kip, multiple departures 07:00-20:00, 8-10 hours), and Vinh in Vietnam (150,000 kip, 06:30, 12 hours). The Nam Ka border crossing to Vietnam opens daily 06:00-18:00 for visa-on-arrival entries.

Getting Around

Phonsavan's long main street is walkable, but reaching jar sites and surrounding villages requires transport. Local buses and pick-up trucks serve other towns in the province. Nine travel agents arrange rentals: bicycles from 50,000 kip/day, scooters around 200,000 kip/day, minivans approximately US$80-100, and 4WD vehicles over US$150 (fuel terms vary). A standard city tour costs about 100,000 kip. Happy Motorcycles reportedly offers some insurance coverage.

When To Go

The cool, pleasant climate makes Phonsavan accessible year-round, though winter nights (November-February) can become chilly at this elevation. Hmong New Year celebrations in Xieng Khouang feature famous bullfights and are a major regional draw. The matsutake mushroom harvest season (hed wai) runs August-September, when these prized fungi are exported at US$30-40/kg to world connoisseurs. Avoid the rainy season (June-October) when some remote roads and trails become difficult.

Where To Stay

Phonsavan offers guesthouses catering to backpackers on the main strip. Budget options include Nice Guesthouse (70,000-100,000 kip, fan-only, WiFi), Sabaidee Guesthouse (from 50,000 kip, near fresh market), and White Orchid (60,000+ kip, no breakfast). Mid-range choices are Kong Keo Guesthouse (US$13 single with WiFi and mosquito nets) and Xieng Khuang Hotel (150,000 kip single including breakfast, free WiFi). Higher-end hotels like Maly Hotel (150,000-400,000 kip) and Anoulak Khen Lao Hotel (200,000 kip with breakfast, the only hotel with a lift) offer more comfort.

Food And Drink

Xieng Khouang's cool climate produces fruits scarce elsewhere in Laos: Chinese pears (mak jong), passion fruit (mak nawt), peaches, and plums. Unique local foods include hed deep (yellow flower-like mushrooms), hed wai (matsutake exported at US$30-40/kg), and the unusual sour swallow (nok ann toong) - fermented migratory swallows caught August-September. Local chili pastes are jaeow bong (sour Luang Prabang-style) and jaeow pa khem (salted fish paste). Restaurants include Nisha (Indian and Lao, vegetarian-friendly, slow service), Craters (Western pizza and burgers), and Bombie's (local and Western food, $2-4, English-speaking owner). The Fresh Food Market offers exotic items including live bamboo rats and matsutake whisky.

Things To Do

The Plain of Jars (UNESCO World Heritage) is the premier attraction, with guided tours from Kong Keo Guesthouse for US$40-45 including lunch and entrance fees. The UXO Visitor Centre (MAG, daily 10:00-20:00, opposite Craters Restaurant) explains unexploded ordnance clearance work begun in 1994. The Xiengkhoung Provincial Museum (Tu-Su 9AM-4PM) displays local relics and ethnic sarongs. War-history sites include Pho Kod War Memorial (20km SW on Rte 7), Tham Piu Cave (where 374 people died in a 1969 rocket attack), and Tajok village where bomb casings form barn pillars and fences. Natural attractions are Tad Ka Waterfall (Nong Het, 100m cascade in limestone karst), Tad Lang Waterfall near Jar Site 3, Nong Tang Lake (48km, picnic site with guesthouse), and Hot Springs at Muang Kham (67km, resort with bungalows).

Safety

Phonsavan sits in one of the most heavily bombed regions in history. On average, 60 people die each year from UXO (unexploded ordnance) accidents - roughly one per day in Xiengkhouang province. Always stay on marked paths and never wander off-trail, especially in rural areas and jar sites. The UXO Visitor Centre and UXO Survivor Information Centre provide context on this ongoing crisis. Motorcycle accidents are common due to poor brakes and equipment - verify vehicle condition before renting, and consider Happy Motorcycles which offers some insurance. The roads are winding mountain routes requiring caution.

Connectivity

Internet cafes on the main street are fast enough for video calls. The Lao Post Office and DHL drop-off point are at the main market. Postcards are difficult to find but occasionally available at Nisha Restaurant or the post office. Laos uses Type A, B, C, and F electrical plugs (220V, 50Hz), so bring appropriate adapters.

Budget

Phonsavan is a budget-friendly destination. Accommodation ranges from 50,000 kip dorm-style rooms to 150,000+ kip mid-range hotels. Street food and local restaurants serve meals from 20,000-50,000 kip. Tours to Plain of Jars cost US$40-45 including transport, lunch, and site fees. Transport within town is cheap, but intercity buses to Luang Prabang or Vientiane run 95,000-200,000 kip. A reasonable daily backpacker budget is 250,000-400,000 kip (approximately US$12-20) covering accommodation, food, and activities.

Day Trips

Day trips from Phonsavan include the Plain of Jars jar sites (1, 2, and 3), Baan Khai and Tajok villages along Route 7 to see UXO crater landscapes and bomb-casing architecture, Tham Xang Caves (36km NW, karst scenery with cave hospital from revolutionary days), Tad Ka Waterfall at Nong Het (100km, spectacular limestone karst cascade), and Muang Kham hot springs (67km, developed resort with forest walks to the spring source and nearby jar quarry). Thathom (130km south) offers karst landscapes and river caves but limited tourist services.

Etiquette

When visiting Hmong and other ethnic minority villages, ask permission before photographing people, especially during ceremonies. Remove shoes when entering homes and religious sites. Dress modestly when visiting temples or cave memorial sites. Regarding UXO crafts: while spoon villages claim to use purchased scrap metal, travelers should understand that the monetary incentive for bomb searching (up to US$1,500 per bomb vs. US$1,000 annual salary) creates ethical complexity around purchasing war-scraps souvenirs.

Go Next

From Phonsavan, buses run to Luang Prabang (200,000 kip, air-con, 08:30), Vang Vieng (95,000 kip, air-con, 07:30), Vientiane (95,000-130,000 kip, multiple departures 07:00-20:00, 8-10 hours depending on route via Pakxan or Vang Vieng), and Vinh, Vietnam (150,000 kip, 06:30, air-con). The Plain of Jars is a short drive away for return visits. Vieng Xai and other caves in the region offer extended exploration. For Vietnam, the Nam Ka border crossing provides visa-on-arrival access.
