Overview
Pathein offers a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience in the Ayeyarwady Delta, 190 km west of Yangon. The town is world-famous for its hand-painted Parasols and umbrellas, a craft over 200 years old, sold directly from workshops for a few thousand kyat.

WiFi available at mid-range hotels but unreliable. Mobile coverage exists but slow. International SIM cards available in Yangon.
Food
Night market opens 17:00-22:00 along the river with BBQ and local snacks (2,000-4,000 kyat). Teashops serve tea for 300 kyat and noodle salad for 800 kyat throughout town.
Language
Burmese is the primary language. English is limited outside hotels and tourist areas. Basic Burmese phrases and a phrasebook help significantly.
Money
Myanmar kyat (MMK) is the local currency. CB Bank near merchant hotels changes USD Monday-Friday 09:00-15:00. ATMs available but credit cards unreliable. Cash preferred almost everywhere.
Transport
Pathein is 190 km west of Yangon via highway. Buses take 4-5 hours. Local transport includes motorbike taxis (1,000 kyat) and foot exploration. Airport has domestic flights via Myanmar National Airlines.
Weather
Cool dry season (November-February) is optimal. Rainy season (June-October) affects umbrella workshop visibility as sun-drying is required.
