Why go?

Ngwe Saung is a quiet beach destination stretched along 9 km of sand on Myanmar's Irrawaddy coast, serving as an inexpensive alternative to the more developed Ngapali. The beach is pleasant though somewhat marred by motorbike and quad-taxi drivers offering tours along the sand. If you're the beach resort type or need a timeout from busy Yangon, Ngwe Saung delivers simple relaxation with basic amenities and minimal tourist infrastructure.

Getting in

Buses to Ngwe Saung depart daily from Yangon's Dagon Ayar Highway Bus Station (5-6 hours, 222 km), with fares ranging from 7,000-12,000 kyat for standard buses or 25,000 kyat for return tickets via Dragon Asia. Shwe Pyi Lwin Travel Co offers one-way tickets at 10,000 kyat with departures at 06:30 and 07:30. Night buses (Asia Dragon, Golden Star) depart at 21:00 and arrive around 03:00. From Pathein, expect 1.5 hours and 4,000 kyat via green Toyota 'Beach Express' at 09:00 and 13:00, or motorbike taxi for around 10,000 kyat. Chaung Tha is reachable by coast motorbike taxi for 8-13,000 kyat (45 min-4 hr). The final 1.5 hours involve steep, winding hills that can cause motion sickness.

Get around

Local transport consists of motorbike and quad-bike taxis: 1,000 kyat within the village and 1,500 kyat to either end of the 9 km beach. Bicycle rental is available. Walking the beach is possible but time-consuming. Motorbike rental is discouraged to prevent the unspoiled destination from becoming an overcrowded Thai-style resort. The main junction near where buses stop serves as the central reference point.

Where to stay

Budget options are limited in Ngwe Saung. The best budget choices include Pearl Ngwe Saung Hotel (US$25-50, negotiable) and guest houses near the main junction like New Shine Guest House (15,000 kyat, shared bathroom). Mid-range options span Shwe Hin Tha Hotel (US$30-60, bamboo huts and stone bungalows) and Silver Coast Beach Hotel (US$25-60). Luxury properties include Ngwe Saung Yacht Club (US$45-230 for various room types including tents), Emerald Sea Resort (from US$75), and Bay of Bengal (from US$70). All Seasons Hotel offers good value from US$3 (5-storey with 41 rooms, WiFi, no beach access).

Food and drink

Roadside restaurants across from Yuzana Resort and Pearl Hotel serve dishes for US$2-4. Jasmine Restaurant offers BBQ seafood and meat with side dishes for 3-4,000 kyat. Golden Myanmar Restaurant (6-10PM, middle of town) provides local seafood specialties. Silver Blue Sea has vegetarian options and a vast menu for 2-4,000 kyat. Soe KoKo Beach House & Restaurant (8AM-midnight) serves Myanmar, Thai, and Chinese cuisine plus seafood. UME Japanese Restaurant (until 2AM, on small hill) features Japanese/Western menus with nightly fire shows. For nightlife, Bay of Bengal Hotel hosts disco-like events; otherwise, teashops and restaurants in the village serve beer, coffee, and tea throughout the day.

Things to do

The primary activity in Ngwe Saung is relaxation—there's not much structured entertainment by design. Lover's Island (Bugwe Kyun) at the southern end is reachable by walking across a sandbar at low tide; it features a Mermaid statue, religious site, and trails (bring shoes for rocky ground). Beach Pagodas sit on rocks 1.5 km before Lover's Island. Bird Island, hours from shore, is a rocky outcrop used by fishermen for bird watching and snorkeling trips with 'Mr Win' (25,000 kyat); bring life vests as currents are strong. At the north end (30 min toward Pathein), a school with 32 pupils aged 5-14 accepts visitors for US$5.

Buy

Cash is essential as ATM access is severely limited: one ATM each at Ngwe Saung Yacht Resort, Yamonnar Oo Resort Hotel, and Emerald Sea Resort, though all three are frequently out of service. KBZ bank opened an office in late 2016. Credit cards are accepted at resorts. Local purchases include painted umbrellas (made locally or imported from Pathein), fresh coconuts sold on the beach, and grass sun hats for 500 kyat—bright green, functional for a few days but not durability-focused.

Safety

The winding, hilly final 1.5 hours of the journey from Yangon can cause motion sickness; prepare medication if susceptible. Motorbike drivers on the beach offering tours can be persistent but are not dangerous. ATM unreliability means carrying sufficient cash is advisable for the entire stay. No other significant safety concerns are noted for this quiet destination.

Day trips

Pathein, famous for handcrafted umbrellas, is 1.5 hours away by pickup or bus (3,500 kyat) or 30 minutes by motorbike taxi (10,000 kyat). Chaung Tha beach can be reached by coast motorbike taxi for 8-13,000 kyat (45 min-4 hr, includes river crossings). From Pathein, onward buses connect to Ngapali and Pyay. Yangon is 5-6 hours away by bus (8-12,000 kyat).

Go next

Chaung Tha offers another Myanmar beach experience reachable via Pathein by bus (7-8,000 kyat, 3-4 hr) or direct motorbike taxi (8-13,000 kyat, more scenic, includes river crossings). Pathein serves as a hub with buses to Ngapali and Pyay plus Yangon return. Yangon buses depart at 06:30, 07:00, 08:00, and 10:00 for 8-12,000 kyat. Tickets are available through guesthouses or in the village.
