Overview
Pantanos de Centla is the largest swamp in North America, covering 302,706 hectares of wetlands in southern Mexico. This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar wetland site offers visitors a chance to explore pristine mangroves, spot hundreds of native species (many endangered), and visit nearby Mayan archaeological sites including Potonchán.

Fees
There is no fee to visit the biosphere reserve. Only boat hire (M$1000/2 hours) and optional guide services cost extra.
Health
Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya, and malaria risk from mosquitoes. Use DEET repellent, wear long sleeves, and sleep under netting in non-air-conditioned rooms.
Money
Prices are in Mexican pesos (M$). Credit card acceptance is limited outside major hotels; carry cash for boat hires, local restaurants, and transport.
Transport
Buses from Villahermosa to Frontera (ADO, ATS, Cardesa) take about 1 hour and cost M$100. Within the reserve, boats are the only transport option at M$1000 per 2-hour hire.
Weather
Always hot and humid. Dry season preferred to minimize mosquitoes. Bring sun protection and lightweight breathable clothing.
