Why Go?
Villahermosa is the capital of Tabasco state and one of Mexico's oldest cities, dating to the early 1500s. The city earned its nickname "Energy City of Mexico" because oil was discovered in the area, but it's also where scientists uncovered Olmec artifacts during drilling operations. For backpackers, it's a practical transit hub with affordable regional cuisine, several solid museums, and easy access to Palenque (Mayan ruins) and Campeche (UNESCO heritage city).

Understand
Villahermosa grew wealthy from oil and gas operations in Southern Mexico, but it also has a rich cultural heritage tied to the Olmec civilization—the oldest known culture in Mesoamerica. Natural resources like cacao, sugarcane, bananas, tobacco, rice, and hardwoods attracted domestic investors. The city sits along the Grijalva River and blends modern industrialization with traditional Tabasco culture. The climate is hot and humid year-round, with a pronounced rainy season from May through October.

When to Go
The best time to visit is during the dry season from November to April. Temperatures range from 19-29°C in the cooler months (December-February) and can climb to 36°C in May. September is the wettest month with 328mm of rainfall—expect sudden downpours. If you visit during the rainy season, bring mosquito repellent as swamps and parks breed mosquitoes. Baseball fans should note that Olmecas de Tabasco play from April to early September at Estadio Centenario.

The main arrival point for most travelers is Central de Autobuses Tabasco, a large 24-hour second-class terminal on Boulevard Adolfo Ruiz Cortines, served by ADO and several other bus lines. ADO GL and ADO PLATINUM services connect Villahermosa to destinations like San Cristóbal de las Casas, Oaxaca, and Mexico City.
