Overview
Olkhon is by far the largest island in Lake Baikal and one of Siberia's true jewels. The 730 sq km island features an amazingly diverse landscape ranging from steppe to forest, combined with a vibrant Buryat shamanic culture that even Soviet centralism couldn't suppress.

Mobile coverage and WiFi are extremely limited on the island. Plan for disconnection during your stay.
Culture
Olkhon is a shamanic holy land with many sacred sites. Show respect at these locations and ask before photographing ceremonies.

Russian is universally spoken; Buryat (related to Mongolian) is the local language. English is rare outside major hostels.
Money
ATMs are scarce on Olkhon Island. Bring sufficient cash from Irkutsk before traveling to the island.
