Overview

Ōkunoshima, also called Usagi Shima (Rabbit Island), is a tiny island in Japan's Inland Sea where hundreds of feral rabbits roam freely. The rabbits are incredibly tame and will hop right up to visitors, making it a unique wildlife experience in Japan.

Before you go

Food

Buy rabbit food (lettuce, carrots) at mainland shops before boarding the ferry to the island.

History

The Poison Gas Museum documents the island's dark WWII past and is a sobering but important visit.

Money

Japan is largely cash-based; carry yen as many places don't accept cards. The hotel accepts cards.

Transport

Ferry from Tadanoumi Port takes 12 minutes to reach Ōkunoshima. No cars allowed on the island itself.
