Overview
Nueva Helvecia, also called Colonia Suiza, is a Swiss-colonial town founded in 1862 by Swiss settlers about 60km southeast of Colonia del Sacramento. The town preserves its European heritage through Alpine-style architecture, Central European crests on houses, and a distinctly Swiss-influenced cuisine.

Bring sun protection and comfortable walking shoes. The Wednesday market is popular; arrive early for the best selection of cheese and baked goods.
Transport
Buses connect Nueva Helvecia with Montevideo and Colonia del Sacramento. No train service. The town is best visited as a day trip from Colonia.
