Overview
Nang Rong is not itself a tourist destination but serves as the nearest town to the Phanom Rung Historical Park, a spectacular Hindu temple complex built in the 10th to 13th centuries and dedicated to Shiva. The town offers a rare glimpse into "real" Thailand with virtually no foreign tourists, little English spoken, and signs only in Thai script.

Before you go
Connectivity
Hotel Wi-Fi is adequate for basic browsing but slow for uploads. No 7-Eleven SIM shops mentioned.
Culture
Little English spoken—destination names on buses only in Thai script, menus rarely in roman letters. Locals are very helpful despite language barriers.
Food
Local eateries are cheap and pleasant. Vegetarians should plan ahead as meat-heavy Isaan cuisine dominates.
Money
ATMs are everywhere in Nang Rong. Cash is king for small purchases and local eateries. Credit cards rarely accepted outside hotels.
Transport
Bus station has frequent services to Bangkok. Motorbike rental (300-400 baht/day) is the best way to visit temples independently.
Weather
Scorching heat—visit temples early morning (dawn) to avoid heat and crowds. Roads are excellent year-round.
