Overview
Nakhon Phanom is a reserved, traditional Lao Isaan city on the Thai-Lao border where the Mekong marks the frontier. It's famous for ancient temples, silk weaving, and a Ho Chi Minh museum marking his 1920s-30s residence.

Thai baht is the local currency. ATMs available; some vendors may prefer cash. Laos kip accepted at border market.
Safety
Generally safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply in markets and at night. River currents are dangerous; avoid swimming in Mekong.
Transport
Skylabs (three-wheelers) are the main local transport. Buses to Laos (Tha Khaek) run 8 times daily, 70-80 baht. Buses to other Isaan provinces depart from central terminal.
