Overview
Nachikatsuura (also called Kii-Katsuura) serves as the gateway to the Kumano Nachi Taisha, a UNESCO World Heritage Shinto shrine whose origins date back over 1,000 years. The town is also famous for the Katsuura Seafood Market, Japan's second-largest tuna market where fish from the nearby Taiji coast are auctioned each morning.

Culture
Kumano Nachi Taisha is an active Shinto shrine. Remove shoes before entering inner halls, and avoid photographing the innermost sanctuary. During festivals, follow the lead of local worshippers regarding seating and procession etiquette.
Money
Japan is predominantly cash-based in smaller towns. Convenience store ATMs (7-Eleven, Lawson) accept foreign cards but may not operate at night. Carry ¥5,000-10,000 for market purchases and shrine donations.
Transport
The JR Kisei Line (Kisei Main Line) runs east-west through Kii-Katsuura Station, making this a stop on the main coastal rail route between Nagoya and Wakayama cities. Japan Rail Pass is valid on all JR services here.
