Overview
Muriwai is a relaxed beach village on Auckland's wild west coast, 42 km from the city center. The star attraction is the gannet breeding colony on Otakamiro Point, the most easily accessible gannet colony in New Zealand, with viewing platforms just steps from the village.

Limited food options exist at Muriwai itself. Stock up at Waimauku supermarket before heading to the beach.
Safety
Rock fishing is extremely dangerous and has claimed lives; always wear a life jacket and avoid gumboots. Beach driving requires careful attention to tide times.
Transport
No public transport reaches Muriwai; a private vehicle is essential. Driving on the beach requires 4WD with appropriate precautions for tides and soft sand.
Weather
The prevailing southwesterly wind makes Maori Bay ideal for paragliding. Summer weekends can be very busy with Auckland visitors.
