Overview
Mount Hiei rises northeast of Kyoto, crowned by the vast Enryakuji temple complex, spiritual headquarters of the Tendai Buddhist sect since 788 CE. The mountain offers a serene counterpoint to Kyoto's crowded sights: ancient halls amid atmospheric forest, a 1,200-year-old flame still burning in Konpon Chudo, and panoramic views over Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa.

Before you go
Connectivity
WiFi limited on the mountain; Kyoto's extensive coverage does not extend here. Temple lodging may offer basic connectivity.
Money
Japan is cash-heavy; temples and smaller attractions may not accept cards. Carry yen for entrance fees (¥500-¥1000 typical) and cable car fares.
Transport
Sakamoto Cable Car ¥840 one-way/¥1570 round-trip; Hieizan Ropeway connects from Kyoto's Yase Station. Both run every 30 minutes 08:00-17:00.
Weather
Mountain weather is cooler than Kyoto; bring layers. Spring (cherry blossom) and autumn (momiji) offer peak scenery. Trails can be muddy.
