Overview
Miyako is a small coastal city of about 51,000 people on the eastern coast of Iwate Prefecture. The main attraction is Jōdogahama beach, a striking stretch of white sand and pine trees within Sanrikwaki National Park.

Miyako is a cash-heavy destination. Credit cards are unlikely to be accepted outside major hotels. Carry sufficient yen from Morioka or use the station's limited ATM services.
Safety
Miyako is generally safe. The 2011 tsunami devastated parts of the coastline; reconstruction is ongoing. Stick to marked trails when hiking and check bus schedules carefully as services are infrequent.
Transport
JR Yamada Line runs 4-6 daily trips between Morioka and Miyako (~2 hours, around ¥2000). Bus 106 Express runs hourly from around 06:00 to 20:30 for similar cost.
