Overview
The Mishima Islands (三島列島) are the northernmost part of the Satsunan Islands chain, three lightly inhabited volcanic islands south of Kyushu with a total population of only around 500. They attract hot-spring fans and scuba divers seeking solitude away from Japan's crowded tourist trail.

Before you go
Accommodation
Minshuku (family guesthouses) are the primary accommodation. All prices are per person and include three meals. Reservations are mandatory — contact Mishima Village or the tourist info office (050-3713-3404 for Iojima bikes, 090-1502-0414 for the only rental car).
Connectivity
Mobile coverage is unreliable on these remote islands. No dedicated tourist WiFi. Bring a Japanese carrier SIM if internet access is needed, though service cannot be guaranteed in all areas.
Money
No ATMs or banks exist on any of the three islands. Bring enough Japanese yen in cash to cover your entire stay, including accommodation, meals, and activities. Credit cards are not accepted at minshuku or local stores.
Safety
Volcanic activity means caution near hot springs. Sakamoto Onsen on Iojima has water at 50°C — only bathe during high tide when seawater cools it. No medical facilities on islands; serious injuries require mainland evacuation.
Transport
The Mishima ferry is the only inter-island transport. Schedules are infrequent — confirm times in advance and build your itinerary around ferry departures. High-speed ferries depart from Kagoshima Minamichiki Port.
Weather
Check ferry schedules before and during typhoon season (June-September) or winter storms. Rough seas can cancel services and strand visitors. Summer brings the popular Mishima Yacht Race (first Saturday of August) — book far ahead.
