Overview
Matsushima is one of Japan's Three Great Views (日本三景), celebrated for approximately 260 tiny islands covered in pine trees rising from the calm waters of Matsushima Bay. The name itself means 'pine islands' (松 'matsu' = pine, 島 'shima' = island).

Transport
Take JR Senseki Line from Sendai to Matsushima (about 40 minutes). Japan Rail Pass valid for shinkansen to Sendai.
Weather
Best visited spring (cherry blossoms) or autumn (foliage, mild temps). Winter brings oysters but cold. Summer is warm and crowded.
