Overview
Matawai is a hamlet of fewer than 100 residents on State Highway 2, positioned halfway between Gisborne and Opotiki along the upper Motu River. Despite its size, it draws adventurers specifically for the Motu Road Trail—a 67 km cycle route following the first vehicle road into the region—and for kayaking opportunities on the Motu River itself.
