Why Go
Maputo is Mozambique's capital since 1898, formerly Lourenço Marques until 1975. The city sits at the mouth of the Santo River, 90 km from the South African border. Buildings range from old colonial palaces to Stalinist concrete boxes with rusty security bars, but lush gardens (cycads, jacaranda, bougainvillea) and Pancho Guedes's surreal Gaudiesque creations give it a pleasing shabby charm. The vibe feels as much South American as African, with few tourists, active street life, and little begging.

When To Go
Maputo has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 14°C (July) to 31°C (February-March). The wet season runs from October to March, with January-March receiving the most rainfall (130-171 mm per month). The dry season from April to September is more comfortable for sightseeing, with June-August being coolest. The best time to visit is during the dry season for lower prices and easier beach access.

Getting In
Most international flights to Mozambique use Maputo's airport (MPM). The Maputo railway station (Estação Central dos Caminhos de Ferro) is one of the grandest in southern Africa, a Neoclassical terminus completed in 1916. buses also connect from South Africa. The journey from Johannesburg takes approximately 9-10 hours by luxury bus.

Getting Around
You can walk the center of the city by day but should steer clear of the central business district at night. The main form of local transport is the chapa, a minibus taxi. Key avenues include Avenida Julius Nyerere (good for Polana neighborhood), Avenida 24 de Julho (well-lit at night), and the Baixa district near Av. 25 de Setembro. The ferry terminal at Av. 25 de Setembro connects to various destinations.

Stay Safe
Violent crime does not reach Johannesburg levels but is still a problem. Pickpocketing is almost guaranteed on busy streets, and thieves have taken cellphones right out of people's hands. At night, avoid walking alone but you are generally safe in well-lit areas along Avenida 24 de Julho. Do not carry much in the streets and keep bags close. The local police will target foreigners around backpacker hostels and bus stations - carry a certified copy of your passport (not the original) and a copy of your visa. Mozambican notaries (Cartorio Notarial) can be found at Av. Lenine and Av. Armando Tivane. Do not carry drugs or knives. If an officer tries to fine you, demand to be taken to the Chief of Police.

Fatima's Place
Dorms from US$15 (as of Jan 2023). Many people really enjoy this place, but it has more of a party atmosphere and is quite a bit larger than Base Backpackers. Some have found the staff and the other guests to be quite standoffish. Others have had more serious issues such as being forced to pay for bookings they did not agree to. It's a bit out of the main part of downtown, but still a very easy and generally safe walk to the business district. Fatima's also offers shuttle service to Fatima's nest in Tofo beach, around 7-8 hr north of Maputo. While this bus is very convenient, it can also be extremely dangerous and the motorist has stolen from expat passengers in the past. Take at your own risk. One free internet computer available. Daily shuttle to Tofo US$25.

Hotel Avenida
5-star hotel on Avenida Julius Nyerere. Has large and fairly comfortable rooms. Rooftop pool and bar for excellent sunsets and a good way of appreciating the rather confusing geography of Maputo. Several restaurants (Thai, Greek, Indian and pub style) within a few minutes. Hotel shuttle to and from the airport available. Free access to the Internet. Rooms from around US$170 (April 2009) including good breakfast but really the only thing that is 5-star about this hotel is the price.
