Why Go to Machida

Machida is the third most populous city in Tokyo Prefecture, yet it distinguishes itself with more green space and nature than any other city in Tokyo. The area around Machida Station buzzes with department stores and shopping, while just minutes away lie quiet residential neighborhoods, parks, and greenery. The city gained fame as the childhood home of Satoshi Tajiri, creator of Pokemon, and a Pokemon manhole cover marks Serigaya Park near his former residence. Minami-Machida has been redeveloped into Grandberry Park, combining outlet shopping with open park space.

When to Visit

Machida experiences four distinct seasons. Spring (March-May) brings mild temperatures of 15-25°C with cherry blossoms at Yakushiike Pond. Summer (June-August) is hot and humid at 25-33°C, though green areas make it 1-2 degrees cooler than central Tokyo—expect sudden showers. Autumn (September-November) offers pleasant 17-22°C weather with autumn foliage and a rainy season in September. Winter (December-February) sees cold temperatures of 10-15°C with occasional snow that may accumulate for a day or two. The Machida Eisa Festival in September features Okinawan folk dances with 23 teams performing near JR Machida Station.
