Why Go
Hachioji is a university city of about 575,000 people in western Tokyo, best known for Mount Takao (高尾山), which earned three Michelin stars in 2007 and draws hikers year-round for its accessible trails and Mt. Fuji views. The city has a young, energetic vibe from its 20+ universities and offers an alternative to central Tokyo crowds, with affordable vintage shopping and local ramen culture that has spawned a dedicated 'ramen tourism' movement since 2003.

Get In
Hachioji is accessed by train from central Tokyo via the JR Chuo Line (from Shinjuku, approximately 50 minutes, around ¥950) and the Keio Line (from Shinjuku, approximately 40-50 minutes). The city has three main stations: JR Hachioji Station, Keio-Hachioji Station, and Takao Station (for Mount Takao). Highway buses connect to Nagoya and other cities.

Get Around
City buses depart from all major train stations and serve even the most outlying areas. Taxis are readily available at station exits. Renting a car is possible but traffic can be slow and parking in Tokyo is expensive.

When To Go
Mount Takao is most crowded during autumn (October-November) when the ginkgo and maple leaves turn brilliant colors, and during cherry blossom season in spring (late March-early April). The summer months bring the Hachioji Fireworks Festival in late July and the Hachioji Icho Festival in autumn when about 770 maidenhair trees turn golden. June-October features a seasonal beer garden at Mt. Takao. Winter visits are quieter but the mountain's trails remain open.

Where To Stay
Accommodation in Hachioji is limited compared to central Tokyo. The Keio Plaza Hotel Hachioji (Asahicho 14-1) offers singles from ¥13,382. Budget travelers typically stay in central Tokyo and make Hachioji a day trip, though the area's universities mean some business hotels cater to reasonable rates.

Food And Drink
Hachioji's signature dish is Hachioji Ramen (八王子ラーメン), a shoyu (soy sauce) base noodle soup with lard and raw onions, unique to the city. The tourism organization Hachimenkai was established in 2003 to promote 'ramen tourism' with an online map of official shops. Along Tama Newtown street, you'll find sushi, udon, ramen, and fast food. Budget lunch sets at places like Yanawarabaxa start from ¥490, while upscale dining at Ukai Toriyama ranges ¥5,000-10,000 in a traditional garden setting.

Things To Do
Mount Takao (高尾山) is the main attraction, a 600m peak accessible by cable car (¥470 one-way, ¥900 round-trip) from Takaosan-guchi Station. The 50-minute hike to the summit passes shrines, food vendors, and Monkey Park (¥400 for adults, ¥200 children). At the top, a visitor center and restaurant offer Mt. Fuji views. The Trick Art Museum near Takaosan-guchi Station costs ¥1300 and features optical illusion exhibits. Other sights include the Imperial Mausoleum (burial site of Showa and Taisho Emperors), Hachioji Castle Ruins with Sagami Bay views, and Sagami Lake for summer fireworks.

Safety
Hachioji is generally a safe residential area following Tokyo's low crime rates. Standard urban precautions apply near train stations at night. Trails on Mt. Takao are well-maintained but can be slippery in wet weather; the steep initial section can be avoided via cable car.

Ukai Toriyama
The food doesn't challenge the non-Japanese palate too much — mostly chicken and sashimi, and to order you just pick one of three dinner sets. The great thing about this restaurant is the ambience. The restaurant comprises a number of traditional cottages situated within a beautifully maintained garden. Reservations are required. It's good to arrive early — give yourself time to walk around the garden. If possible, go in a group of at least four people. The restaurant is open for lunch, but if you go for dinner, you can enjoy the lanterns lighting the grounds.
