Overview
Lunca Ilvei is a remote mountain community of approximately 4,000 residents in far northeastern Transylvania, immediately west of Bucovina. Visitors come to experience traditional Romanian village life—farming, forestry, and shepherding—away from tourist crowds.

Accommodation
Limited options: Stefan cel Mare guesthouse, Constantin guesthouse, Casa Alexandra, and a youth hostel. Book ahead.
Drink
Locally produced țuică (plum, apple, or pear brandy) is strong—up to 60% alcohol content. Drink responsibly.
Food
Traditional sheepfold cheeses (caș, urdă, jintiță) are the authentic highlight. Two village bars serve meals.
Language
Romanian is the local language. Some older residents speak French; younger people are learning English in school.
Safety
Large guard dogs protect mountain sheepfolds. Always call out to the shepherd before approaching to have dogs recalled.
Transport
Lunca Ilvei has a train station on the Cluj-Napoca–Suceava route. Daily bus and train to Bistrița depart early morning; return trips leave just after midday.
