Before you go

Hiking

Prionia is the standard trailhead for Mt. Olympus (2,917m summit). refuges along the route provide shelter. No technical climbing required for standard routes, but proper hiking boots and fitness needed.

History

Ancient Dion was the sacred city of Macedon, where Alexander the Great made offerings before campaigns. The site includes temples to Zeus, Hera, and Artemis plus an intact theater.

Money

Greece uses the Euro (€). ATMs are available in Litochoro town center. Cash is preferred at small tavernas and campsites; cards accepted at hotels and larger restaurants.

Transport

Local buses connect Litochoro to Plaka Beach, Katerini, and the Prionia trailhead. Car rental available in town. Intercity buses to Thessaloniki and Athens depart from the main bus station.

Weather

Mountain weather changes quickly — dress in layers for Mt. Olympus hikes. Coastal Plaka Beach has Mediterranean climate with hot summers. Best visibility for mountain views is early morning.
