MTN and Airtel provide good coverage. Mobile money agents throughout the city centre and markets. WiFi limited; some cafes like Sankofa Cafe offer internet access.
Money
Ugandan Shilling (UGX) is the local currency. ATMs from Bank of Africa, Bank of Baroda, Centenary Bank, Housing Finance Bank, dfcu Bank, and PostBank Uganda accept Visa and Mastercard. Mobile money (MTN and Airtel) is widely used for cashless transactions.
Safety
Standard urban precautions apply. Avoid walking alone at night in poorly lit areas. Boda-boda accidents are common—use helmets. Northern Uganda has historical conflict; Lira War Memorial reflects regional history.
Transport
Boda-bodas are the main local transport, typically USh 2,000-5,000 per ride within town. Long-distance buses to Kampala (USh 25,000-40,000) depart from Namayiba Bus Park area. The town centre is walkable.
Weather
Tropical climate with hot, dry conditions December-March. Two rainy seasons: April-May and August-November. Green seasons may affect road conditions and cause flooding in low-lying areas.
