Overview
Gulu is Northern Uganda's largest city and regional economic centre, serving as a practical stop for NGO workers, overlanders, and travellers heading to South Sudan or northwestern Uganda. While not a polished tourist destination, it offers authentic Acholi culture, relatively affordable accommodation, and access to historic sites like Samuel Baker's Fort Patiko.

Before you go
Connectivity
Free WiFi available at Acholi Inn lobby. Mobile data via local SIM cards (MTN, Airtel) is the most reliable option for internet access.
Money
Ugandan Shilling (USh) is the local currency. ATMs at Stanbic Bank, Kenya Commercial Bank, and Equity Bank accept Mastercard and Visa. Some hotels also accept US dollars.
Safety
Gulu has stabilised significantly since the LRA conflict era. Standard urban precautions apply—secure valuables, avoid isolated areas at night, and be cautious with money displays.
Transport
Gulu Airport has limited flights (Mon/Wed/Fri via Eagle Air). Boda-boda motorcycle taxis are the most common local transport. Roads to surrounding destinations are passable but can deteriorate in wet season.
