Connectivity
24-hour electricity via solar and generator. Internet is limited and slow. Mobile coverage depends on carrier.
Food
Staple is nsima (cassava/maize porridge) with fish. Locally brewed gin (Kachasu, Masese) and Carlsberg beer available. Mahewu is a traditional non-alcoholic drink.
Money
Malawian Kwacha (MWK) is the local currency. Prices for local services are quoted in Kwacha, while most lodges quote in US dollars. ATMs are not available on the island—bring enough cash for your stay.
Safety
Likoma is generally safe with low crime. Standard island precautions apply. Medical facilities are limited—carry essential medications.
Transport
The Ilala ferry runs twice weekly; Likoma Express operates 3 times weekly. Boats to/from Nkhata Bay depart early morning. Moto-taxis cost around 3,000 K. Hiking the island takes 2-3 hours.
