Health

The sulfuric waters are said to benefit blood circulation and muscular pain. However, the strong sulfur smell may irritate respiratory conditions. Those with skin conditions should consult a doctor before extensive bathing.

Money

Kusatsu is primarily a cash-based economy. Most ryokans, restaurants, and bath houses accept cash only. ATMs are available at the 7-Eleven convenience store near the bus terminal and Japan Post Bank. Credit cards may be accepted at larger hotels like Hotel Village.

Transport

The Kusatsu Onsen Bus Terminal is the main transportation hub. Naganohara-Kusatsuguchi Station is the nearest rail station. Town loop buses run frequently (¥100), and free hotel shuttles connect to major ryokans.

Water

Hot spring water is highly acidic and not potable. Do not drink from onsen facilities. Tap water is safe for drinking throughout the town.

Weather

At 1,200m elevation, Kusatsu experiences cool summers (15-25°C) and cold snowy winters (-5 to 5°C). Pack layers year-round and waterproof gear for sudden mountain weather changes.
