Overview
Kronstadt is a historic naval fortress founded by Peter the Great in 1704 on Kotlin Island in the Gulf of Finland. The city served as Russia's key maritime stronghold for three centuries and was a closed military city until 1998.

The port is ice-bound for 140-160 days annually, December through April. Best visited May-September when forts are accessible by boat.
