Overview

Kozhikode was a maritime trading port and the capital of the Zamorin rulers. Its trading past brought Arab, Persian and European merchants to this coast.

Why go?

Kozhikode (formerly Calicut) was the capital of Zamorin kings and a major port on the Maritime Silk Road, frequented by Arab, Persian, and European traders. The English word 'calico' originated from this city's old name. Today it offers a mix of centuries-old streets with traditional food stalls alongside modern malls and cafes. It's a center of commerce and education with significant institutions like IIM Kozhikode and NIT Calicut.

Getting in

Kozhikode has a domestic airport (Karipur Airport, CCJ) with an ATM from Baroda Bank just outside the terminal. Free Wi-Fi requires an Indian mobile number for OTP verification; SIM cards are not sold inside the airport. The city is connected by direct trains to Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore, and Thiruvananthapuram. Long-distance KSRTC buses depart from Mavoor Road station.

Getting around

Traffic snarls make daytime travel difficult in most parts of the city. Auto rickshaws are common for short hops. AC taxis are available at ₹1,000 for a full day, found at the Railway Station or Mananchira area. The 18km beach road between Beypore and Pavangad has very light traffic. The city has several mapped walking routes ranging from 1km to 8km.

When to go

Kozhikode has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging 23-34°C year-round. The monsoon runs June-August with July receiving 750mm of rainfall. The best time to visit is October-March for drier weather. Thirayattam, an ethnic performing art, is celebrated annually between January and April.

Where to stay

Budget travelers can find dormitory beds from ₹150-300 at places like Gulf Star Dormitory on Mavoor Road or Lowfare Dormitory near the railway station. Basic lodges near the railway station start at ₹200-500. Mid-range options include Metro Tourist Home (₹600) and Aradhana Tourist Home (₹800). Beach area hotels like Nalanda Hotel (₹650) and Apex Inn (₹500) are recommended to avoid city traffic congestion.

Food and drink

Kozhikode is famous for biriyani and beef preparations. Rahmath Hotel near Mathrubhumi and Stadium serves excellent biriyani and fish. Paragon Restaurant on Kannur Road is crowded for mutton biriyani. Best beef curry in the city costs just ₹40 at a signless restaurant near Poolakkadavu Junction (1-9PM). Traditional dishes include pathiri, vellayappam, pazham nirachathu, and Calicut halva available at shops near Palayam Junction. Pure South Vegetarian serves masala dosai for ₹40 and full lunch for ₹130. Street food thattukadas operate in the evenings at MM Ali Road and Calicut Road intersection.

Things to do

Mananchira Pond and Gardens (free entry, gates open 2PM) features 250 colonial-style lamp posts and historic buildings. Sarovaram Biopark (₹10 outer, ₹10 inner forest section) has mangroves, otters, and butterflies. CVN Kalari offers Kalarippayattu martial arts demonstrations. Kappad Beach (17km) is Blue Flag certified with Vasco da Gama's 1498 landing memorial. The ancient Valiyangadi market (3km walk from railway station) still includes Hindu, Muslim, Jain, Gujarathi, Marwari, and Tamil merchants. Several temples dating back 600-1400 years dot the city.

Shopping

Five major malls include Hi-LITE Mall (1.4 million sq ft, 200 branded shops, 8 cinemas at Palazhi 8km away), Focus Mall (250,000 sq ft, opp. new bus station), R.P. Mall (six-level AC complex, opp. new private bus station), and LuLu Mall. Kairaly Handicrafts on MM Ali Road sells wooden elephants, boats, and Kerala dancer models. Traffic snarls near malls can last several hours.

Safety

Kozhikode is generally safe for travelers. Standard precautions apply in crowded markets and at night on less-traveled streets. Women should dress modestly around temples and mosques. The beach areas are well-patrolled during daylight hours.

Day trips

Kappad Beach (17km) offers swimming, view towers, and Vasco da Gama's landing memorial. Elathur (12km) is a beautiful riverside village with estuary. The Vallikkattu Kavu sacred grove near Elathur spans 27 acres with monkeys, peacocks, wild boars, and orchids. Beypore and Pavangad lie on a quiet 18km beach road perfect for cycling.

Long-distance KSRTC buses depart from Mavoor Road station; reserve tickets six hours ahead. Direct trains connect to all major Indian cities with three-day advance reservation recommended. The 'Silverline' bus runs to Kottayam at 8:15PM, stopping only twice. Online booking available through keralartc.com.

    Calicut Halva

    This very sweet and colourful solid stuff made from maida (highly refined wheat) is available at a few shops near Palayam Junction and comes in various flavors, such as banana, ghee, coconut, cashew, date, tender coconut, pineapple and jack-fruit. However, karutha haluva (black haluva) made from rice is the most popular variety. If you are health conscious, keep away from all halvas.
