Why Go
Koh Kong is Cambodia's gateway to the Cardamom Mountains and one of the country's greenest provinces. The town serves as a base for spotting rare Irrawaddy dolphins in Asia's largest mangrove estuary, island hopping to pristine beaches, and multi-day treks into largely unexplored jungle. Its small size and border location keep prices low for budget travelers seeking authentic, off-the-beaten-path experiences.

Getting In
Koh Kong has an airport (KKZ) but no scheduled commercial flights—the runway is in poor condition. Most travelers arrive via the Cham Yeam border crossing, 8 km from town, connected to Thailand's Hat Lek. Motorbike taxis from the border to downtown cost around 150 baht. Buses to Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville depart around 07:00 (40,000 riel), with a 13:00 bus to Phnom Penh also available.

Getting Around
The town has unusually wide streets and long blocks by Cambodian standards, making walking possible but transport often necessary. Motorbike taxis charge 1,000 riel/km with a 1,000 riel starting fare. Local drivers are relatively slow and roads are considered safe compared to other parts of Cambodia.

When to Go
The dry season from November to April offers the best weather for trekking and dolphin watching. Koh Kong Province contains the largest intact mangrove-estuary system in Southeast Asia, with wildlife viewing most reliable during cooler months. The area is largely unexplored due to its remote, formerly inaccessible location.

Where to Stay
Accommodation clusters in the town center, along the riverside street, and on Chicken Farm Road (Street 12). Budget guesthouses with fan rooms cost US$3-6, while air-conditioned rooms start around US$10. Street 12 has the highest concentration of mid-range options. For beach paradise, head to the Koh Sdach archipelago 30+ km south, where rooms on Koh Sdach and Koh Toteung range US$10-120.

Food and Drink
Restaurants cluster around the central roundabout serving good local Cambodian food. Lin's Restaurant and Bar (Street 997, near Vattanac Bank) offers Western and local dishes from 22,000-35,000 riel with free WiFi. Thmorda Crab House on Koh Pow River serves Thai seafood with kayaking and karaoke. Stebie C Sports Bar (Street 999) is known for excellent wood-fired pizzas (US$7) and budget beer (US$1). The Waterfront Bar serves Cambodian food with river views.

Things to Do
The main attraction is dolphin watching in Peam Krasop Mangroves—Asia's largest—where Irrawaddy dolphins, finless porpoises, otters, and endangered birds including the spoon-billed sandpiper (global population ~200) can be spotted. Boat tours can be arranged at Lin's Restaurant. Day trips to Koh Kong Island offer white sandy beaches and crystal-clear seas. Trekking with overnight stays in the Cardamom Mountains is available through guesthouses like Oasis Bungalow Resort. Along Hwy 4, 30 km south of Traeng Trayoung, O'bak Retes rapids make a scenic stop.

Safety
Be aware of significant litter throughout the town and environs. Local roads are safer than average for Cambodia, with slow-moving traffic. Standard precautions for border towns apply—keep documents secure and be cautious with currency exchanges.

Budget
Daily costs for backpackers run approximately US$15-25 including dorm bed (US$3-7), local meals (22,000-35,000 riel), and transport. Border crossings often quote prices in Thai baht, USD, or Cambodian riel—accept any and expect change in mixed currencies. ATM withdrawals typically dispense US$100 bills with no change available except at exchange shops.
